The Shift to Gender Equality - Michelle Deshong - NAIDOC

What does it take to create a gender-equal and just future that is grounded in intersectional feminist movements?

Hosted with First Nations women advocates and leaders, in collaboration with a working group of The Shift to Gender Equality, and as we mark NAIDOC Week 2021, Homeward Bound Busara Circle’s Michelle Deshong invites members to an online for a day of reflection, strategy, and action on Wednesday 7 July, 10am-5pm AEST.

Joining this convening will support you to challenge and reframe your contribution to intersectional gender equality movements in Australia. Together we will make time to listen, trust, think, and act differently as we bring our collective energy to stand with First Nations women’s work to achieve gender justice and equality for First Nations women, and learn from each other to grow our intersectional feminist and gender equality movements in Australia.

Guided by the priorities of First Nations women, the convening of gender equality advocates across the country will build on the momentum of gender equality advocacy in recent times. We are also keen to try and build an agenda and process that prioritises the pursuit and practice of intersectional feminist politics – reflecting on shortcomings of the movements in the recent and more historic past. We are committed to establishing guidelines to support a trans-friendly meeting space.

Morning sessions:

  • Hosted by Aunty Jackie Huggins, Co-Chair Treaty Advancement Committee; June Oscar, Social Justice Commissioner, Australian Human Rights Commission, Associate Professor Chelsea Watego, and Michelle Deshong
  • A panel convened by Michelle Deshong, featuring Aunty Jackie Huggins, June Oscar, and Associate Professor Chelsea Watego, challenging us to think, trust, and act differently
  • An opportunity to learn more about the impact of the psychology of colonial dispossession of voice in the intersectional feminist and gender equality movements in Australia

Afternoon sessions:

  • Explore the question, “How are you ensuring the full and equal participation of First Nations women in the spaces you are working in?”
  • Deepen our thinking about intersectional discrimination, power, gender equality change, and movement building, including with reflections from a panel of diverse leaders in our movements
  • Collective discussions on strengthening our intersectional feminist and intersectional gender equality movements in Australia
  • Conclude with individual and organisational pledges on what we will do differently.

Online via Zoom
Includes breaks to step away from your computer or join others in a creative or meditative break room
For those newer to the work of gender equality there will be support mechanisms in place to ask clarifying questions in a more private environment, to connect with others in the movement, and to join a welcome call ahead of the convening.

The convening is being organised by The Shift, an emerging network focused on strengthening connections between gender equality advocates in Australia and supporting movement-building for reflective and intersectional feminist politics and practice. Our convening team is Michelle Deshong (she/her), Jawoon Kim (she/her), Sienna Aguilar (she/hers), Alison Aggarwal (she/her), Helen Dalley-Fisher (she/hers), Amy Haddad (she/her), Caroline Lambert (she/her), and Sally Moyle (she/her), with support from Tanja Kovac (she/her) and Kim Rubenstein (she/her).

Registrations are free, and will close on Monday 5 July. Register here: https://events.humanitix.com/listen-think-trust-act-differently

In addition to your own attendance, we encourage you to invite emerging leaders, gender equality advocates or feminist activists in your circles. Together, we can strengthen our strategic voice and power of our movements.
