SO… What’s Next?
Well, the first part of Homeward Bound is now complete for you. The first step in a journey of 1000 steps.
Now, as we sail once again back into the Beagle Channel and look back with the 20:20 vision that hindsight provides, it is a good time to reflect on what it was that got you to here.
This journey began long before you stepped aboard the ship, bound for the Antarctic ice. It started before you boarded a flight for the Tierra del Fuego archipelago, or set about raising the funds to make this trip a reality.
You read, googled, heard or otherwise became aware of this outrageous, ambitious concept Homeward Bound – 80 women of science journeying to the bottom of the world. You read about it and thought “I’m the kind of woman who’d take something like that on”.
When did you become that woman? At what precise time did you cross that particular threshold, unconscious un-noted and unmarked? When did something like this become possible for you? Like many of the great transitions in life, we often aren’t fully aware of it until after its passage.
You may have come to this voyage hoping to learn something about leadership, of strategy and science and being visible in the world. And while these are no doubt clearer to you now, this is not the purpose that inspired this audacious undertaking.
The purpose behind 20 days of living, learning and working together, the raison d’être for this voyage, was for you to learn something about yourself. Now that you have, where do you want to take this?
How has the landscape and context of Antarctica helped shape my professional aspirations as a Scientist?
Which specific behaviour changes arising from my leadership learning will most enable me to achieve my goals?
What will it take to put my Visibility plan into action?
How is clarity starting to emerge from my Personal Strategy Map?
What’s my appetite to help achieve the goals of the Homeward Bound 10 Year Outreach?
How will the work of my project team enable this?
What role can I play in helping identify, mentor and support another woman to be part of Homeward Bound?
Now, stand by the shoulder of the next woman who takes your place, stay true to the intention and focus of Homeward Bound, ask for and give help liberally to the women who share this journey with you. Give us advice, make changes, be courageous, take your seat, don’t say no to opportunity, be loving, have a wonderful ride and know, with deep certainty, we are all with you, from now on in.
The Hero’s Journey begins as it ends – returning to the normal world and knowing this place for the first time.
