STRATEGY SECTION A:
INTRODUCTION AND FUNDAMENTALS

INTRODUCTION TO THE STRATEGY STREAM

A STRATEGY IS ONLY AS GOOD AS THE CAPABILITY TO EXECUTE IT, HENCE STRATEGIC CAPABILITY IS FUNDAMENTAL TO LEADERSHIP SUCCESS. RESEARCH CONSISTENTLY SHOWS THAT THIS CAPABILITY IS SEVERELY LACKING IN ORGANISATIONS, TEAMS AND INDIVIDUALS.

THE MAIN REASONS FOR FAILURE ARE:

1. The strategic choices are not clearly articulated or understood by those who would implement them

2. The strategy is simply a set of targets without clear purpose or congruence with culture and values

3. The strategy is not resourced appropriately

4. The strategy is not managed – reviewed, discussed or adapted or is managed using operational approaches

5. Inadequate leadership

HOWEVER, WHEN AN EXECUTION FRAMEWORK IS USED TO TRANSLATE AND MANAGE STRATEGY, AND LEADERSHIP CAPABILITIES ARE STRENGTHENED, THE LIKELIHOOD OF SUCCESS IS SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVED.

We focus on three areas in the Homeward Bound strategy stream:

1. PERSONAL STRATEGY AND PRACTICE – making conscious choices for whole of life

2. LEADING STRATEGY EXECUTION

3. ORGANISATIONAL STRATEGY – contributing to a wider organisation strategy
